glór calls for Applications from Performing Artists for PlatForms

PlatForms is a glór initiative to support artists in creating new work – whilst providing insight for audiences into the development process and the choices that artists make.

PlatForms will see selected artists across art-forms sharing excerpts from their work-in-progress, with opportunities for audience responses and feedback. Three artists will present short excerpts of their work – followed by brief discussions with the audience about what they have seen.

glór will run a free of charge Artists’ Workshop, led by Thomas Conway explaining what PlatForms is all about and will shed light on how PlatForms could be a useful goal for you if you are currently developing a new work. All details below.

The next PlatForms deadline is 10 April with performances taking place on Thursday 30 May.

PlatForms is an opportunity for professional artists practising in any performance genre to spend some brief time at glór testing an excerpt from a new work. Three or four artists/companies will be selected to present a short 10/15 minute excerpt that has been in development, and to place it carefully in front of the audience, to tease out their responses to it, and help test the genesis of his/her ideas. The intention of this initiative is to provide a platform and sharing point for innovative work within its development, in a manner that is supportive, constructive and progressive. glór is keen to showcase a range of art forms as part of the evening, so artists making work in theatre, music, dance, circus or working across all or some of these disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The selected artists will have the opportunity to spend a 3/4 hour technical session in glór with our technicians testing and rehearsing the excerpt of work in advance, and will also have the opportunity to have a pre-arranged phone/skype chat with the PlatForms dramaturg/host to focus their objectives and questions for the evening. After the event the artist/company will also have an opportunity to have a debrief by phone/skype with the dramaturg/host to reflect on their learnings from the initiative. After each excerpt is shown on the evening, the dramaturg will facilitate a brief and well-framed discussion between artist and audience to enable everyone to reflect and respond to what they have seen.

Selection will be made by members of the glór team in consultation with the Dramaturg/host. A small contribution to travel expenses will be made to each artist/group selected (€75 per group).

Artists’ Workshop: What PlatForms is All About

Free of Charge but please pre-book    STUDIO
A free workshop for artists led by Thomas Conway
This workshop is ideal for artists considering applying to glór’s work-in-progress PlatForms event, (30 May), and will shed light on how PlatForms could be a useful goal for you if you are currently developing a new work. Dramaturg/director Thomas Conway will delve into what dramatic/performative elements may enhance your work, and how he can help artists reflect on their theatrical choices, be it in a theatre, music or dance work.

Guiding principles for applying to Platforms:

• The work must be performance based, new and in development (not yet launched or premiered)
• Selection will be based on innovation, quality and bravery
• Specific questions you have about the work at the current stage of development are really useful to share in the application – and will give us a sense of what you hope to tackle through PlatForms.
• Applications are welcomed from both emerging and established professional artists

The PlatForms Application form is available here.

Performances by the PlatForms artists will take place on Thursday 30th May at 7.30pm in glór. The audience are requested to reserve tickets in advance and then pay what they feel on the night (in cash!).
