Rachel Macmanus is a Clare based artist who works through drawing, painting and live art.
Rachel uses her live art works as a form of physical self-expression. The work is about the comfort derived in repetitive strenuous physical action, and how we can spend a lot of our time each day performing ‘useless’ actions over and over again.

Pushing Through and Ode to Sisyphus will be projected on a loop from 12 – 9pm in the Spás area.

Pushing Through

Pushing Through is neither a story nor a message. It’s a glimpse into a netherworld of blind groping, pushing, violent shoving and bouncing against a rippling pool of black. The work addresses the Sisyphean act of pushing against something that won’t give, and claustrophobia. How the work affects the viewer, if at all, is not predictable, but if echoes of it re-appear in your dreams then it has done its job.

Tyre Flip – Ode to Sisyphus

I use my live art works as a form of physical self-expression. I am inspired by the myth of Sisyphus, and subsequently my live works are a commentary on repetition and needless action. I like to do something that may appear useless, but requires exertion, either physically or mentally, and perform this for as long as possible. The work could be described as being about the comfort derived in repetitive strenuous physical action, and how we can spend a lot of our time each day performing ‘useless’ actions over and over again.

Welcome to Culture Night
Culture is catching with venues and public spaces across the island of Ireland as they open their doors to host a programme of free entertainment, as part of an all-island celebration of arts, heritage and culture. Returning for its fourteenth year, Culture Night 2019 will take place on Fri Sep 20th.

glór presents a great programme of events for Culture Night, including work by Performance Artist Rachel Macmanus, a screening of the acclaimed new film At Eternity’s Gate exploring the life of tortured artist Vincent Van Gogh, and a breath-taking close to Culture Night at glór with a late night foyer gig by Sara Ryan and Steo Wall.
