ConTempo Quartet was founded in Bucharest in 1995 and has been based in Ireland since 2003 as Galway Music Residency’s Ensemble in Residence. They have performed nearly 2000 concerts in 46 countries. ConTempo Quartet is recognised as one of the most exciting and vibrant chamber ensembles performing today. It has performed world-wide in many prestigious venues, winning prizes at competitions in Munich, Rome and London, and worked alongside artists of the highest calibre. It has broadcast widely on European radio and premiered and recorded many contemporary pieces. In 2013 ConTempo was also appointed RTÉ’s Quartet in Residence.

The programme includes:

Haydn – Quartet Op.33/2 Joke [1781]
Rebecca Clarke – Poem for string quartet [1924]
Jane O’Leary – ConTempo ConVersations [2005]
Schubert – Quartet in G major D.887 [1826]

Rebecca Clarke’s serenely beautiful Poem from 1924 and Jane O’Leary’s 2005 ConTempo Conversations are framed in this programme by two of the quartet greats, Haydn’s witty Joke quartet and Schubert’s epic masterpiece, his posthumously published G major quartet.
